Unifying Perspectives in Computational and Robot Vision (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering)

Unifying Perspectives in Computational and Robot Vision (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering)

Currently there is a gap between the research conducted in computer vision and robotics communities. There are many characteristics in common in computer vision research and vision research in robotics. Despite having these common interests, however, “pure” computer vision has seen significant theoretical and methodological advances during the last decade which many of the robotics researchers are not fully aware of. On the other hand, the manipulation and control capabilities of robots as well as the range of application areas have developed greatly. In robotics, vision can not be considered an isolated component, but it is instead a part of a system resulting in an action. Thus, in robotics the vision research must include consideration of the control of the system, in other words, the entire perception-action loop. This requires that a holistic system approach is useful and could provide significant advances in this application domain. Assembled here is a collection of some of the state of the art methods that are using computer vision and machine learning techniques and apply them in robotic applications.

Privacy-Preserving Data Mining: Models and Algorithms (Advances in Database Systems)

Privacy-Preserving Data Mining: Models and Algorithms (Advances in Database Systems)

Advances in hardware technology have increased the capability to store and record personal data about consumers and individuals, causing concerns that personal data may be used for a variety of intrusive or malicious purposes.

Privacy-Preserving Data Mining: Models and Algorithms proposes a number of techniques to perform the data mining tasks in a privacy-preserving way. These techniques generally fall into the following categories: data modification techniques, cryptographic methods and protocols for data sharing, statistical techniques for disclosure and inference control, query auditing methods, randomization and perturbation-based techniques.

This edited volume contains surveys by distinguished researchers in the privacy field. Each survey includes the key research content as well as future research directions.

Privacy-Preserving Data Mining: Models and Algorithms is designed for researchers, professors, and advanced-level students in computer science, and is also suitable for industry practitioners.

Model Checking

Model Checking

Model checking is a technique for verifying finite state concurrent systems such as sequential circuit designs and communication protocols. It has a number of advantages over traditional approaches that are based on simulation, testing, and deductive reasoning. In particular, model checking is automatic and usually quite fast. Also, if the design contains an error, model checking will produce a counterexample that can be used to pinpoint the source of the error. The method, which was awarded the 1998 ACM Paris Kanellakis Award for Theory and Practice, has been used successfully in practice to verify real industrial designs, and companies are beginning to market commercial model checkers.

The main challenge in model checking is dealing with the state space explosion problem. This problem occurs in systems with many components that can interact with each other or systems with data structures that can assume many different values. In such cases the number of global states can be enormous. Researchers have made considerable progress on this problem over the last ten years.

This is the first comprehensive presentation of the theory and practice of model checking. The book, which includes basic as well as state-of-the-art techniques, algorithms, and tools, can be used both as an introduction to the subject and as a reference for researchers.

The Difference Engine: Charles Babbage and the Quest to Build the First Computer

The Difference Engine: Charles Babbage and the Quest to Build the First Computer

In 1821, Charles Babbage was reviewing a set of mathematical tables with a colleague in preparation for a scientific presentation when, after finding a wealth of errors, he exclaimed in frustration, "I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam!" With this outburst, Babbage began to envision an end to human errors in the numerical tables upon which finance, trade, science, and navigation relied.
The Difference Engine is the fascinating story of his heroic quest, against all odds, to build the first computing machine more than one hundred years before the modern computer we use today was invented. Set against the politics and science of the explosive early Victorian era, The Difference Engine is a thrilling tale of Babbage's exuberant determination. Like Longitude, The Difference Engine is a fascinating portrait of the human story behind a pivotal moment in history and one of the most influential inventions of our time.

DNA Computing Models (Advances in Information Security)

DNA Computing Models (Advances in Information Security)

Sir Francis Crick would undoubtedly be at the front of the line ordering this fascinating book. Being one of the discoverers of DNA, he would be amazed at how his work has been applied to mankind's most important invention, the computer. DNA contains the genetic instructions for the biological development of cellular life forms or viruses. DNA computing uses DNA as a substrate for storing information, while molecular biological operations are used to manipulate this information.

DNA Computing Models begins with a comprehensive introduction to the field of DNA computing. This book emphasizes computational methods to tackle central problems of DNA computing, such as controlling living cells, building patterns, and generating nanomachines. DNA Computing Models presents laboratory-scale human-operated models of computation, including a description of the first experiment of DNA computation conducted by Adleman in 1994. It provides molecular-scale autonomous models of computation and addresses the design of computational devices working in living cells. It also addresses the important problem of proper word design for DNA computing.

DNA Computing Models is designed for researchers and advanced-level students in computers science, bioengineering and molecular biology as a reference or secondary text book. This book is also suitable for practitioners in industry.
